The pieces.
Three pieces published in the Journal, in reverse chronological order. Listed alongside the advisor's notes that close the catalogue pages, which are not separately archived.
Aspen in October: the case for the off-season.
The mountain reads differently outside ski season. A correspondent on the case for late autumn, before the snow arrives and the prices follow.
Mykonos, by air, by the office.
Eight weeks of demand between mid-June and mid-September. The Mediterranean season, by the calendar.
Saint-Tropez, and the question of La Môle.
La Môle is the airport. The question is the runway, the season, and whether the saving is worth it.
Selected lines.
Five sentences from the writings of C. Beaumont, drawn from the Journal and from the advisor's notes that close the catalogue pages. Compiled by the editor.
Aspen in October is the same airfield it is in February, but the answer it gives to the question of why one would go is different on every approach.
The Mediterranean is not a season. It is eight weeks, in the middle of three months, and most correspondents arrive in the second week of August because everyone else does.
La Môle is the airport. The runway is the question, the season is the constraint, and the saving over Nice is real until it is not.
A short field demands a short conversation about what the aircraft will do on a hot day with a tailwind. Most correspondents would rather have the long conversation.
Off-season is the season the office books for the correspondents who already know the route. The discount is incidental; the field is empty, which is the actual luxury.
