A note, on the choosing.
A route, in the office's view, is not chosen by distance. It is chosen by what waits at the other end and what time the correspondent intends to be there. From New York, Miami is a two-hour decision and Aspen a four-hour one; the correspondent ought to be on the ground in either by midday and at dinner without having lost a working afternoon. The figures in the comparison table are typical, not absolute. A Wednesday in February to Aspen is one price; the Saturday before Christmas to the same field is another entirely. The office advises early commitment for any peak-season routing, particularly the Alpine altiports through December, and Mediterranean island fields through August. Where a routing repeats, the office maintains standing arrangements with operators on the same equipment, the same crews where possible, the same ground handlers at either end. The fifth time to Nice ought to feel like a continuation of the fourth, and the tenth ought to feel like one's own.
